چکیده

In this paper we present preliminary results of a new technique for autofocus of synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery, which employs global optimisation techniques based on image quality measures and motion statistics of the towfish. From each reconstructed image a quality measure is calculated and balanced with a cost measure calculated from the known statistics of the towfish motion. This is used to perturb the estimated towfish path and a new image is reconstructed. Using only a simple image contrast measure the preliminary results seem promising although the technique is very computationally expensive. It is envisaged that the technique could be improved by the choice of better image quality measures.

A Wavefront Sensing Method for Synthetic Aperture Sonar Autofocus

Synthetic aperture Sonar (SAS) is a technique for improving sonar resolution by using known sonar motion to lengthen the useful sonar aperture. Unfortunately the images formed with a strip-map SAS are rapidly degraded when there is any perturbation from the known flight-path. This paper outlines a new autofocus procedure for improving SAS imagery, based on wavefront sensing techniques from the ...

Autofocus of Multi-band, Shallow-water Synthetic Aperture Sonar Imagery using Shear-averaging

Abstract— A significant problem with Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) imaging is the compensation of compensating for unknown errors in the sonar path trajectory. Unknown path errors in SAS have the effect of blurring and smearing the sea-floor image. Inertial navigation systems as used in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), are not accurate enough for use in SAS. To deal with this problem, technique...

Noncoherent Autofocus of Single-Receiver Broad-Band Synthetic Aperture Sonar Imagery

− A significant problem in Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) imaging is compensating for unknown errors in the sonar path trajectory. Unknown deviations from the ideal sonar trajectory have the effect of blurring and smearing the sea-floor image. In typical operating conditions, the blurring can completely obscure details in the imaged scene. Techniques for estimating path deviations from the reco...

Contrast Optimisation of Coherent Images

The method of contrast optimisation is investigated for use on coherent images, specifically synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) images. Previous attempts to apply contrast optimisation to autofocus SAS images have failed due to large random fluctuations in contrast caused by coherent speckle in the image. The statistics of this contrast fluctuation are developed and applied to determine a critera f...
